Introduction

Software Details

We at NBKJ, LLC have developed an AutoCAD plug-in called IP-Docs (Intellectual Property- Documentation Organization and Control System) that streamlines the current tedious and costly process of producing the drawings required for patent, trademark and copyright applications. Our revolutionary software solution provides patent applicants (such as corporations, attorneys, and individuals) with an auto-interactive, step-by-step assistant in rapidly generating all the necessary illustrations for a patent application from the projections of one core 3D solid model.

Processes IGES, SAT, STEP, STL, WMF, DWG and DXF formats to include all existing Autodesk import/export filters, standards and conventions.

Our technique reduces drawing and rework time exponentially and its automatic linking with documentation sources eliminates excessive paper trails from the design source to the patent office. Use of our product will generate exceptional cost savings and stimulate creativity throughout industry by making the design and patent drawing production and submission process more accessible and affordable to applicants at large.
IP-Docs utilizes a single 3D model to generate multiple 3D to 2D vector to raster drawing projections.

IP-Docs reduces labor-intensive work and provides the technical graphics tools necessary for manufacture, patent drawing production, technical illustration and marketing graphics production included in one complete system. It automates multiple vector graphics from a 3D model (volumetric and geometric data) and rapidly formats the drawings to patent, technical and presentation graphics, documentation and print publishing specifications.

Beginning with research and development 92 percent of the design process is graphically based. The other 8 percent is documenting it. We target a widely occurring need, namely, generating attractive and informative industrial illustrations and formatting schemes for modern documentation from the source. We represent an advance in the relatively under-developed area of computer graphics involving non-photo realistic rendering, where the needs are extensive and available methods are few. An area where existing software, rework and editing is excessive in cost and labor to reach patent, technical and print publishing specifications and standards.

The projection techniques used to represent 3D images on 2D paper or flat computer screens took many years to develop. Actually, it has taken millennia for the techniques needed for graphical communications to evolve into the complex and orderly systems we have today. The combination of IP-Docs within AutoCAD's architecture offers a cost effective and streamlined approach in the evolution of technical graphics and its broad applications.

Motivation to find an electronic solution to patent and related illustration/documentation comes from the US government via the USPTO.

No one wants to change. We all love good quality, hand-inked patent drawings, but we're all being forced to change, and we've developed the least painful way to do it, IP-Docs.

Interactive Drawing Automation, Management and Security:

Derived from 3D vector source files we have automated drawing projections and routines allowing as much as 90% time reduction savings for all technical graphics reproduction.
One core 3D vector *.dwg file is used to manage multiple drawing sets. Edits to the source file auto update all views.
Upon completion of drawing sets our software exports the files in the appropriate raster formats for electronic print publishing standards providing individual files ready to insert into PC/MAC modern documentation applications.
